Farewell to the Dream Ship: MS Deutschland Leaves Phoenix Reisen in 2026

It is news that will likely hit many cruise fans hard, even if it has been quietly looming in the industry. As of December 17, 2025, it is a certainty: The era of the MS Deutschland at Phoenix Reisen is coming to a definite end. Following the 2026 summer season, the ropes will be cast off for the last time, and the Bonn-based tour operator will not renew its cooperation with the American owners.

But why part ways with a ship that stands for German television history like no other? And what awaits guests on the final voyages?

You don’t have to be a shipowner to understand that a vessel built in 1998 requires care. The MS Deutschland is undoubtedly a beauty with its brass fittings and 1920s flair, but technically and visually, the shine has worn off in some places.

Two worlds are colliding here: On one side, Phoenix Reisen with Managing Director Benjamin Krumpen, who are consistently modernizing their fleet (Amadea, Amera, Artania) and making it ecologically fit (keywords: shore power and catalytic converters). On the other side, the owner company Absolute Nevada LLC. They use the ship during the winter semester as a floating university for the "Semester at Sea" program.

Functional cabins are sufficient for student shared living at sea, but the demanding German cruise guest, who takes the motto "Welcome Home" literally, requires investments in hotel infrastructure. Since the American owners are unwilling to spend these funds for the short summer charter season, Phoenix is pulling the plug. It is a decision for quality and against an investment backlog.

The logistical challenge behind the scenes has been enormous for years. Every spring, the World Odyssey (the ship's university name) transformed back into the MS Deutschland. Pallets of Phoenix tableware, bed linen, and decorations were hoisted on board to replace the American college feeling with German service.

From September 2026, this will come to an end. The ship will likely continue to live primarily as a campus or—depending on the owners' strategy—perhaps eventually disappear from the market entirely.

Anyone wanting to experience the legendary "Kaisersaal" (Emperor's Hall) one last time needs to be quick. The farewell season runs from May to September 2026. Phoenix Reisen has put together itineraries that let the ship shine one last time.

Particularly charming: In addition to the major ports of Bremerhaven and Kiel, Cuxhaven will also be a port of call. When standing on deck there, looking out at the water, with the "Alte Liebe" pier greeting you on starboard while the North Sea reveals its vastness on port, many a handkerchief will surely be pulled out.

The highlights of the final season:

  • Grand Atlantic Loop: Via the Azores and Madeira (22 days).
  • Classic Baltic Sea: The Baltic States and Stockholm, a journey full of culture.
  • The Finale: A short trip along the English Channel, ending in Bremerhaven in early September 2026.

With the arrival in September, not only does a charter contract end, but also a piece of German cruise culture. Although the MS Deutschland has officially not been the ZDF "Traumschiff" since 2015, for fans, it always remained so at heart. Now the order is: Cast off for the last grand voyage.
