It is done: Since December 13, 2025, a fresh wind has been blowing in the Port of Galveston, Texas. The Norwegian Viva, the second ship of Norwegian Cruise Line's (NCL) modern Prima Class, has officially begun service in her new homeport. But this isn't just about a new ship—simultaneously, the brand-new Cruise Terminal 16 was inaugurated. We take a look at the events of the last few days and reveal what cruise fans can expect now.

Anyone setting sail from Galveston can now look forward to significantly more comfort. Just in time for the 2025 winter season, Cruise Terminal 16 was opened. A massive project into which around 156 million dollars were invested. The result? Old warehouses have been transformed into a state-of-the-art processing center.

The design is not only stylish but, above all, functional:

  • No jams at boarding: Thanks to new biometric facial recognition at customs control, wait times are expected to drop by up to 30%. A quick glance at the camera is all it takes.
  • Parking made easy: A new parking garage with over 1,600 spaces and optimized zones for taxis and shuttles ensure that the vacation begins in a relaxed manner right upon arrival.
  • Space for everyone: The terminal is designed to smoothly process ships with up to 5,000 passengers.

The Norwegian Viva is no ordinary ocean giant. With space for over 3,200 guests (at double occupancy), NCL consciously focuses on a more generous sense of space than many competitors.

The Highlights Onboard:

  • Ocean Boulevard (Deck 8): Instead of a narrow promenade, there is 44,000 square feet of open space wrapping completely around the ship—including "Infinity Beach," where the pools visually merge with the sea.
  • Pure Adrenaline: For action fans, there is the Viva Speedway, a three-story go-kart track, and "The Drop," a ten-story dry slide.
  • The Haven: Those who prefer exclusivity will find suites with 24-hour butler service and private elevators in this "ship-within-a-ship" area.

Since the ship is now at home in Texas, NCL has adapted the offerings culturally. At Q Texas Smokehouse, there is authentic BBQ with brisket and ribs—accompanied by live country music. Even if true BBQ purists might debate the meat quality, the ambiance is well-received. Culinary offerings are complemented by the Indulge Food Hall, which replaces the classic buffet concept with modern food truck stations.

In terms of entertainment, NCL pulls out all the stops: With the Broadway adaptation of "Beetlejuice," world-class entertainment is offered in the theater.

The current debut season takes the Norwegian Viva on 7-night routes to the Western Caribbean.

  • The Stops: Cozumel and Costa Maya (Mexico) as well as Roatán (Honduras).
  • The Highlight: Harvest Caye in Belize. NCL's private island offers exclusive beach experiences and is considered particularly safe and comfortable for families.

For "repeaters," NCL also has longer 14-day tours to the Eastern Caribbean (including the Dominican Republic, St. Maarten) on the schedule starting in January 2026.

The stationing of the Norwegian Viva is a strong signal. Not only does it generate an estimated 177 million dollars annually for the local economy of Galveston, but it also offers travelers from the Southern US (and international guests) a first-class alternative to the ports in Florida. With modern technology at the terminal and a ship that combines luxury and fun, nothing stands in the way of a relaxed start to the vacation.
