Air Rescue on the Celebrity Apex: US Coast Guard Evacuates Passenger off Puerto Rico
The Mission off Puerto Rico The modern Edge-class ship was returning from St. Kitts towards Florida when the health of a 65-year-old American citizen deteriorated drastically. Although the medical department on board is excellently equipped, it reaches its limits with complex, life-threatening diagnoses. Consequently, the ship's doctor, in consultation with the cruise line and the US Coast Guard (USCG), decided that an immediate evacuation was unavoidable.
The incident occurred approximately 24 nautical miles north of Arecibo. This was a strategically favorable position, as the US Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen in Puerto Rico was quickly accessible.
Precision Work Between Sky and Sea An MH-60T Jayhawk rescue helicopter was deployed for the mission. With a length of over 300 meters and a width of 39 meters, the Celebrity Apex is a stable platform, but the design of the Edge class entails specific characteristics. The distinctive "Magic Carpet," a movable platform on the starboard side, can create air turbulence. However, Coast Guard pilots are trained for exactly these scenarios.
To keep the helicopter hovering safely above the ship, the captain of the Celebrity Apex turned the vessel into the wind to minimize relative movement on deck. With wave heights of up to two meters and wind gusts of up to 25 knots, this was a maneuver that required maximum concentration on the bridge and in the cockpit.
The Evacuation Process A rescue swimmer was first lowered onto the deck to prepare the patient for transport. Due to his critical condition, the man was hoisted up lying down in a special rescue litter. His wife, who accompanied him, was safely winched into the helicopter sitting in a rescue basket.
Instead of heading for the large international airport, the crew flew the patient to the Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport. This is significantly closer to the Centro Médico in San Juan, the leading trauma center in the Caribbean. This time advantage can be decisive in emergency medicine.
Focus on Safety For the approximately 2,900 passengers on board, operations continued largely undisturbed. After completing the maneuver, the Celebrity Apex continued her journey towards Port Canaveral. The incident underscores that even on the most modern ships, the connection to shore-based rescue chains remains indispensable—and that the professionals of the US Coast Guard are ready around the clock to ensure safety at sea.
