It is news that is likely to cause nostalgia among many cruise fans: The MS Deutschland, often affectionately referred to as the "Grand Dame" of German ocean cruising, will no longer sail for the Bonn-based tour operator Phoenix Reisen after the 2026 summer season. This marks the end of a ten-year partnership that has provided many travelers with unforgettable moments at sea. We have summarized the facts and background information for you.

In short: It simply doesn't fit anymore. Phoenix Reisen and the US-based owner company of the ship have different visions for the future. While Phoenix expects a high standard of comfort and condition for the German-speaking market, the owners are focused on the US market.

There, the ship operates as the floating university "World Odyssey" during the winter months. For this purpose – shipping students across the world's oceans – the current condition is apparently sufficient. However, for the demanding German premium market served by Phoenix, massive investments would have been necessary. In addition, there are stricter environmental regulations, especially in Norway, which the ship will soon no longer be able to meet in its current technical state.

The MS Deutschland is not a run-of-the-mill ship. Built in Kiel in 1998, it exudes the charm of the 1920s with its brass, teak, and the famous "Kaisersaal" (Emperor's Hall).

  • Size: With a length of around 175 meters and a width of 23 meters, it is pleasantly manageable.
  • Passengers: A maximum of 600 guests enjoy a familiar atmosphere here.
  • Special Feature: Due to its shallow draft, it can also call at smaller ports and rivers that remain inaccessible to the huge liners.

Technically, however, she is a child of the 90s. She lacks modern environmental technologies such as shore power connections or efficient exhaust gas cleaning systems, which makes operation in environmentally sensitive regions like the Norwegian fjords almost impossible from 2026 onwards.

Those who want to experience the nostalgic flair of the MS Deutschland one last time have the final opportunity in the summer of 2026. Phoenix Reisen has put together a schedule that fully utilizes the ship's strengths.

The highlights of the farewell tour:

  • Around Great Britain: Thanks to the compact dimensions, the ship visits small English ports.
  • Islands of the Atlantic: An extensive tour to the Azores and Madeira.
  • The Anniversary: During Kiel Week in June, the ship celebrates its 100th voyage for Phoenix – a must-attend event for true fans.
  • The Far North: A grand circumnavigation of Iceland is also on the agenda.
  • The Finale: At the end of August 2026, it will be time to say a final goodbye in Bremerhaven.

Booking tip: When you stand on deck looking out at the sea, remember – starboard is right and port (backbord) is left. Especially when entering narrow fjords or ports, getting the right spot at the railing is worth it!

For Phoenix Reisen, the departure means a capacity loss of around 600 beds. Guests will likely have to switch more frequently to the fleet sisters MS Amadea, MS Artania, and MS Amera in the future. There is no direct successor for the Deutschland (yet).

The ship itself will not be scrapped. It will remain as the "World Odyssey" for the "Semester at Sea" program and will continue to serve as a campus at sea – though then without German tour guides and coffee time.

The departure of the MS Deutschland from Phoenix Reisen is a logical, albeit painful, consequence of economic constraints and rising environmental requirements. Those who love the classic ocean liner style should take advantage of the 2026 season. After that, the memory remains of a ship that wrote television history and was considered a second home by many.
