Today, Monday, is a "turnaround" day for AIDAdiva. The ship is ending a 9-day voyage this morning, which began in Warnemünde on November 1. This evening, it is scheduled to depart directly for its 133-day world cruise. This passenger and logistics changeover is a complex operation. In just a few hours, the crew must bid farewell to disembarking guests, clean the ship, completely re-provision it, and embark up to 2,500 new world cruise guests.
The departure is planned for this evening. Official tourism portals list 6:00 PM, while the terminal operator (cruisegate-hamburg.de) states 8:00 PM. Such differing times are not unusual for large-scale logistics operations and often reflect final loading and boarding schedules. The voyage beginning tonight is not just long; it's strategically new for AIDA Cruises. With 133 nights, 55 ports, 27 countries, and 4 continents, it's a true XXL adventure (cost: from approx. €24,145).
The highlight: It is the first AIDA world cruise to combine the East and West Coasts of the USA as well as Japan.
The route leads from Hamburg to New York, through the Panama Canal to Los Angeles and San Francisco. Guests will spend New Year's Eve in Hawaii (Honolulu) before continuing to Asia in 2026—with stops in Tokyo, Busan (South Korea), and Halong Bay. The ship will finally return to Hamburg on March 23, 2026, via the Indian Ocean and Africa (Maldives, Cape Town). With this premium route, AIDA is positioning itself more strongly in the global world cruise market. Fittingly, the ship was recently completely overhauled.
The AIDAdiva (built in 2007, Meyer Werft) is no longer the ship it once was. It was the first of three ships to undergo the "AIDA Evolution" program in Marseille in early 2025 (February/March)—the largest modernization in AIDA's history, with a budget in the three-digit million range.
This upgrade was technically necessary and strategically aimed at the new, premium audience.
1. The New Guest Experience: The ship received a "ship-in-ship" concept. Suite guests now have exclusive access to new areas like the Sky Deck and the Rossini Lounge. Six large family suites (for up to 5 people) with private sun decks were integrated at the stern. All 1,032 cabins were renovated. The culinary offering was also massively expanded to include the Restaurant French Kiss, East Fusion, a Tapas Bar, and several new bars (e.g., Panorama Bar, Tokyo Bar). For families, there is a new "Fun Park" on Deck 14 with a climbing tower.
2. The "Invisible" Technology: Efficiency is crucial for a 133-day voyage. The hull received a new, biocide-free coating over 9,000 square meters, which reduces friction resistance and thus fuel consumption.
A new reverse osmosis system optimizes freshwater production. Especially important on long stretches: An innovative "Solid Waste Processor" shreds waste and reduces its volume by up to 95 percent.
Perhaps the biggest change was digital: The entire IT infrastructure was rebuilt. This required laying 50 kilometers of new cables and replacing 22 tons of electronics. Only this makes modern connectivity and streaming on board possible.Today is the first major stress test for the "new" AIDAdiva. The departure not only marks the beginning of a 133-day record-breaking world cruise but is also the first practical test for the "AIDA Evolution" modernization program. The complex turnaround in Hamburg is just the prelude to the many challenges the modernized ship and its crew will face over the next four months.
