The route correction was announced just a few days before the departure on November 7, 2025. Such a last-minute decision entails significant logistical and travel law consequences for all passengers.
Last-Minute Change of Homeport
La Romana in the Dominican Republic has been designated as the new embarkation and disembarkation port. This forced change constitutes a fundamental alteration to the booked travel service. The original itinerary from Montego Bay was geographically focused on the Western and Central Caribbean, including stops in Mexico, Belize, and Honduras. Due to the shift of the hub to starboard (right side of the ship) to the Eastern Caribbean, the ports of call and the distances to be covered must be massively adjusted.
The consequence for travelers: more sea days are to be expected. Every additional sea day, introduced in place of a scheduled port call, is legally considered a travel defect.
Coordinated Withdrawal of Cruise Lines – Is Security the Main Reason?
TUI Cruises' decision is not an isolated incident. A market analysis shows that several major, international cruise lines are reacting synchronously. Disney Cruise Line has also officially canceled calls in Jamaica. Observations suggest that ships from other providers, such as the Queen Elizabeth (Cunard) and the Brilliant Lady (Virgin Voyages), are also avoiding the island.
This industry-wide withdrawal suggests that the cause is not a weather-related event but an external risk – most likely concerning the security situation or regional instability. For cruise companies, passenger safety is the highest priority.
What the Route Change Means for Passengers
The cancellation of the homeport has a high legal risk for the organizer under German Travel Law.
- Right to Price Reduction: Because the travel service is not rendered in accordance with the contract, and contractually guaranteed destinations and the agreed-upon departure port are omitted, travelers have an undoubted right to a reduction of the tour price. This right exists regardless of whether TUI Cruises is at fault for the change.
- Compensation Possible: The extremely short notice of the official cancellation, just a few days before the start of the trip, can be interpreted as a lack of communication. This increases the likelihood that passengers can claim compensation for lost holiday enjoyment (Schadensersatz wegen entgangener Urlaubsfreude).
A Look to Port (left side of the ship): Uncertainty for December
However, the chosen interim solution, La Romana, will soon reach its capacity limits. It is expected that the replacement port will be overloaded on the planned turnaround days as early as December. This means: If the security situation in Montego Bay does not stabilize quickly, TUI Cruises would be forced to find a third homeport at short notice.
Although the November voyages have been canceled, the December calls in Montego Bay (including for the Mein Schiff 1 and the AIDAsol) are currently still listed in the schedules. Given the coordinated withdrawal of competitors, it is highly probable that these dates will also be adjusted or canceled in the coming weeks.
TUI Cruises is strongly advised to transparently inform about the reasons and to offer goodwill solutions beyond the legally required price reduction. A proactive approach can prevent costly individual legal disputes.
