Traffic Jam Alert in Kiel: AIDAprima Guests Need an XXL Buffer on November 8th
The A7, Germany's most important north-south connection, will be closed from Friday evening (November 7, 10:00 PM) until Monday morning (November 10, 5:00 AM). The critical travel window for the AIDAprima guests' entire day of arrival is thus directly within this closure period.
Travellers coming to Kiel from Southern or Western Germany who normally use the A7 must divert onto the alternative routes, the A1, A21, and B205. These roads are not equipped to handle the diverted volume of long-distance traffic, regular commuters, and the additional flow of approximately 1,500 cars and buses transporting cruise guests.
The consequence is an extremely high risk of massive and unpredictable time delays. The logistical risk level for land travel is classified by experts as "Red" (High).
Buffer Time is Paramount: Plan Significantly More Time!
The most crucial advice for everyone arriving by car or bus: you must drastically increase your buffer time. Experts recommend adding at least four to six hours extra to your regularly planned journey time.
The reason for this is the vessel's tight schedule. The AIDAprima is set to depart at 5:00 PM, but the entire check-in process must be completed by 4:00 PM at the latest. The cruise line has urgently stressed that the allocated check-in time slots must be strictly adhered to. Due to the necessary on-time departure, accommodating late-arriving guests cannot be guaranteed. Anyone who arrives too late risks missing the start of their journey.
How to Get on Board on Time: Strategies Against the Traffic Chaos
- Arrive Early (Early Boarding): Be sure to use the earliest possible check-in time slot. The terminal and car parks at Ostseekai open as early as 10:00 AM. A very early arrival in Kiel is the best insurance against unforeseen traffic jams.
- Use Official Routes: In heavy traffic, do not rely on "shortcuts" suggested by your navigation system on small country roads. These quickly become overwhelmed and only make the situation more chaotic (the so-called "GPS Panic" effect). Strictly follow the official detours (A1/A21).
- Consider the Train as an Alternative: Rail travel is generally a reliable option. However, due to the expected "demand shock" (many car travellers switching), there may also be capacity bottlenecks and crowded trains between Hamburg and Kiel.
- Double Strain on the Port: Note that on this day, not only must arriving guests bypass the traffic jam, but the departing passengers from the previous cruise must also use the same overburdened road network to get home. Traffic flows converge in Kiel.
Even though the Ostseekai in Kiel is excellently equipped as a year-round hub for large ships and offers short distances from the car park to the terminal (approx. 150 meters), the best terminal logistics are of little use if the guest cannot reach the hard departure deadline from the starboard side due to a land-side traffic gridlock. Plan ahead to save the start of your holiday!
