JOMO over FOMO: Norwegian Cruise Line Shifts to Intentional and Relaxing Travel

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) is initiating a significant change in the world of travel. In response to the exhaustion caused by the constant pursuit of experiences, known as the "Fear of Missing Out" (FOMO), NCLH is positioning the "Joy of Missing Out" (JOMO) as its new, core vacation theme. This strategic reorientation, officially announced on October 15, 2025, responds to the desire of many travelers to escape the pressure of "Hustle Culture" and digital hyper-connectivity.

For years, the motto for many vacations was to check off as many sights as possible. However, this stress led nearly half of those surveyed (49%) to need a "vacation from their vacation" afterward. NCLH sees the JOMO strategy as the remedy for this psychological issue. It is not about missing out on experiences but about consciously choosing what truly matters to oneself—and sometimes opting for peace and quiet.

Harry Sommer, President and CEO of NCLH, emphasizes that travelers are moving away from rigid itineraries and instead seeking intentional and restorative experiences. The JOMO message deepens the 56-year-old brand philosophy of "Freestyle Cruising"—moving from operational freedom to psychological freedom. NCLH is thus not just selling a trip but a curated experience for the restoration of personal well-being.

The new strategy is based on extensive market research. A survey of over 12,000 respondents from nine countries shows:

  • Over 70 percent of travelers want to move away from fast-paced sightseeing and seek more relaxing, meaningful experiences.
  • 77 percent of travelers are deliberately planning their upcoming vacations to be relaxing and slow-paced. They choose "presence over pressure".
  • Two-thirds (67%) see JOMO trips as a form of self-care.
  • The main motivations for JOMO travel are: Unplugging (45%), escaping the pressure to "see and do it all" (40%), and prioritizing spontaneity over fixed plans (34%).
  • Over half of all travelers (54%) consider cruises an ideal setting for JOMO trips, placing them on par with spa retreats and beach vacations.

The JOMO strategy expands the existing freedom aboard. Where Freestyle Cruising removed operational constraints (no fixed dining times, no formal dress codes), JOMO now gives explicit permission to consciously choose to do nothing.

To fulfill the promise of "Doing less, more meaningfully," NCL focuses on specific product features:

  • Relaxation Zones: Areas like the Mandara Spa, the quiet Observation Lounge, or The Waterfront (also called Ocean Boulevard) are promoted as serene environments that invite guests to disconnect.
  • Stress-Free Planning: All-Inclusive packages including an open bar, specialty dining, and high-speed Wi-Fi (powered by Starlink) significantly reduce planning and budgeting stress. The inclusion of fast internet serves the purpose of freedom of choice—allowing guests to quickly take care of essentials (or fully disconnect) without the stress of high costs.
  • Flexibility: Passengers can sleep in, stay onboard while the ship is in port, or spend the entire day at the spa. This freedom to consciously pace the daily schedule is the core of the JOMO idea.

The Caribbean is promoted by NCLH as the top JOMO destination because it offers "sun, serenity, and space to unplug." The private islands, such as Great Stirrup Cay and Harvest Caye, also serve as a controlled, stress-free environment for the unplugging experience.

NCLH uses JOMO to clearly differentiate itself from its main competitor, Royal Caribbean International (RCL). While RCL heavily relies on short, activity-packed cruises and ships like the Icon of the Seas (FOMO focus), NCLH deliberately positions itself with longer, JOMO-compatible itineraries (4 to 14 days) as a provider of deceleration and mental restoration. The focus is on the "higher-value guest" seeking peace, quality, and intentionality. The JOMO strategy thus transforms the Caribbean routes from a pure volume business into a premium segment.
