On a 15-day cruise in Northern Europe, the MS Vasco da Gama from Nicko Cruises had to change its itinerary. Shortly after arriving in Bergen on October 8, 2025, the subsequent ports of Nordfjordeid and Kristiansund were canceled. The reason was not technical issues but bad weather.

Since the ports are in areas that can be stormy in autumn, the cruise line made the decision for passenger safety.

From a legal perspective, the route change is considered a travel defect, which gives passengers the right to a reduction in the travel price. However, because the change was due to force majeure (bad weather), travelers are not entitled to compensation for lost vacation enjoyment.

This incident shows that cruises in high latitudes are demanding and that cruise lines like Nicko Cruises must react quickly and professionally to changing weather conditions to ensure safety.
