Carnival Firenze: Relaunch in South America with Unique Cruises
The three new "Carnival Journeys" cruises are designed to reposition the ship from its current home port on the U.S. West Coast to the East Coast. This allows Carnival to turn a logistically necessary ship transfer into an attractive, bookable offering, while simultaneously testing a new product concept.
The Carnival Firenze was originally built as the Costa Firenze in 2020 and joined the Carnival fleet in 2024. With its unique "Fun Italian Style" concept, the ship is perfectly suited for these longer, more experience-oriented voyages. The routes are designed as "Carnival Journeys," a special type of cruise that differs from the classic, shorter "Fun Ship" sailings. The Pacific Gateway cruise is a 15-day journey from Long Beach, California, to San Antonio, Chile, calling at less common ports like Acapulco (Mexico) and Manta (Ecuador). A special highlight is the crossing of the equator. The 14-day Southern Passage from San Antonio to Buenos Aires, Argentina, promises adventure, including rounding Cape Horn and sailing through the Darwin Channel and the Chilean Fjords. The final 16-day voyage, the Atlantic Ascent, travels from Buenos Aires to Miami. Highlights include visiting the Brazilian Carnival in Rio de Janeiro and observing an annular solar eclipse at sea.
Carnival's 14-year hiatus in South America resulted from a fleet restructuring in 2013, which saw the Carnival Splendor withdrawn from the region. Additionally, external factors such as security concerns in the area and operational challenges at the cruise line played a role at the time.
With this current return, Carnival is strategically re-positioning itself and entering a market already served by cruise lines like Nicko Cruises, Phoenix, and Norwegian Cruise Line. Carnival is leveraging its "Fun Italian Style" branding and focus on the longer, culturally immersive "Carnival Journeys" to stand out from the competition and reach new target audiences.
These voyages are part of a smart, interconnected fleet strategy. The success of these sailings could pave the way for a more permanent presence for Carnival in South America. The cruise line is using this opportunity to gather valuable data and strengthen its position as a dynamic market leader that continuously adapts its offerings to maximize profitability.
