This innovation isn't a random idea; it's a direct response to a clear trend. Riviera Travel has observed a significant increase in demand for solo travel. Bookings in this segment have surged by 66% compared to the previous year, now accounting for almost 13% of the company's total bookings. Almost half of these guests are repeat customers, which clearly shows their loyalty. Until now, Riviera Travel has offered cabins for single travelers on select departures. With the MS George Eliot, they are taking the next step, dedicating an entire ship to this growing market segment.
The ship has been specially adapted for this target audience. The original capacity of 140 passengers will be reduced to just 68, creating a relaxed, almost family-like atmosphere on board. The crew-to-guest ratio is also exceptionally high at 1:2, allowing for excellent, personalized service. A major benefit for solo travelers is the elimination of single supplements. Every guest gets a private double cabin, so no one feels disadvantaged.
For the 2027 season, four seven-day routes are initially planned on the popular rivers Danube, Rhine, and Moselle. The names of the trips, such as "The Blue Danube for Solo Travelers," clearly indicate who the offer is for. Additionally, there will be two longer, 15-day voyages, including a special trip from Budapest to the Black Sea.
The decision for the solo ship is just one part of a larger strategy. Simultaneously, Riviera Travel has introduced the Riviera Alba, its first ship to operate outside of Europe, sailing on the Mekong in Asia. This demonstrates that the company is expanding specialized offerings in Europe while also entering new regions.
Riviera Travel is setting new standards here. While other providers are still considering individual cabins for solo travelers, this company is offering a customized, complete ship experience. This could inspire other cruise lines to rethink their own offers for guests traveling alone.
