The festival stretched along the entire port promenade—from the Landungsbrücken to the Elbphilharmonie. Visitors could enjoy a diverse program from Friday to Sunday.
The event kicked off on Friday with a highlight: The cruise ship Vasco da Gama was staged in the glow of the Blue Port Hamburg, accompanied by fireworks. Saturday was the peak of the event: the Grand Hamburg Cruise Days Parade. Festively illuminated ships sailed down the Elbe, surrounded by a sea of spectators. While an initial announcement spoke of a parade with eight ships, the final confirmed number was five, which is the usual number for this impressive spectacle. On Sunday, a double ship departure provided a spectacular finale before the ships left the port.
A total of eight ships from seven different shipping companies participated, showcasing the diversity of the cruise world. From the German market leaders AIDA and TUI Cruises to the luxury brand Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and international providers like MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line—there was something for every cruise fan. Even river cruising was represented by the MS Sans Souci.
The ships docked at various terminals: AIDAsol and Mein Schiff 4 were at the Altona pier. The EUROPA and the Norwegian Dawn were moored at the HafenCity terminal. The MSC Preziosa and AIDAperla were at the Steinwerder terminal, while the Vasco da Gama had its berth at the Überseebrücke. The MS Sans Souci docked at the pier.
In line with the festival, the port was transformed into a magical light installation: the Blue Port Hamburg. Since 2008, Michael Batz's light art has been an integral part of the event, making bridges, terminals, and ships glow in a fascinating blue. The Blue Port Hamburg even lit up longer than the Cruise Days themselves—from September 10 to 21. This was no coincidence, as the Seatrade Europe, a major trade fair for the cruise industry, took place at the same time. The blue light thus created a bridge between the public festival and the professional fair, offering international trade visitors an impressive welcome backdrop.
Seatrade Europe attracted over 3,500 participants from more than 80 countries to Hamburg. A highlight was the "Destination Discovery Friday," during which up to 500 pre-registered consumers were allowed to visit the fair. This created a direct connection between the industry and cruise enthusiasts.
The event also served as a stage for the opening of the fourth cruise terminal in HafenCity. This shows that Hamburg continues to focus on growth in the cruise sector. Although there are still challenges, such as the planned shore power supply for all ships, the city is working to combine growth with greater sustainability.
