The Port of Hamburg has experienced an impressive upswing in the first half of 2025. As the only one of Europe's three largest ports, it was able to increase its seaborne cargo volume, while competitors in Rotterdam and Antwerp-Bruges struggled with declines. This growth is no coincidence but the result of strategic decisions and an optimal infrastructure.

The port recorded a 3.6% increase in total seaborne cargo. The container business was particularly strong, growing by 9.3%. Both imports and exports contributed equally to this success, indicating a healthy trade balance.

A closer look reveals that trade with the Far East has grown significantly, especially with India (+41.6%) and Malaysia (+93.2%). Cargo exchange with China, Hamburg's most important trading partner, also increased by 10.5%. The port also strengthened its role as a hub for the Baltic Sea region, with traffic to that area increasing by 20.8%. Hamburg has thus established itself as a central gateway between Asia and Europe.

More and more large container ships, also known as Megamax ships, are calling at the Port of Hamburg. The number of calls by ships with a capacity of over 10,000 TEU increased by more than 50%. This underscores Hamburg's growing importance for international shipping companies. The port's adaptability and forward-looking infrastructure planning, such as the planned widening of the turning basin, are key advantages. While other ports struggle with congestion and bottlenecks, Hamburg has been able to optimize its operations.

Success at the quayside, i.e., in loading and unloading ships, is only half the battle. Smooth transport into the hinterland is just as important. Hamburg scores here with its excellent connections by rail, truck, and inland waterway. Rail transport saw a growth of almost 24%, a clear sign of its efficiency. In contrast, Rotterdam and Antwerp-Bruges experienced massive delays of up to 78 hours for inland waterway vessels. Hamburg's reliable logistics make the port particularly attractive to shippers.

The main reason for Hamburg's rise is the realignment of global shipping alliances. In particular, the Gemini Cooperation between Maersk and MSC has redrawn the maritime map. This alliance places a high value on punctuality, and its ships were twice as punctual as those of the competition on the Asia-Europe routes. Ports that can reliably handle these large ships are now the preferred destinations.

Furthermore, Hamburg is benefiting from an increase in so-called transhipment traffic. This means that cargo is transferred from a large ship to a smaller one that transports the goods to other ports, for example, in the Baltic Sea region. This growth confirms Hamburg's role as a central hub.

The positive developments in the first half of the year are likely to continue. Nevertheless, there are risks, such as the decline in trade with the USA. Stricter environmental regulations also pose a challenge. To remain successful, Hamburg must continue to diversify its trade relations and invest in sustainable technologies. The current success is a strong foundation for cementing Hamburg's position as one of the most important pillars of European logistics.
