The cruise ship Disney Adventure is set to leave the Wismar shipyard on Monday afternoon, September 1, 2025. What seems like a simple schedule change is actually the culmination of a unique and highly complex shipbuilding project. The departure, originally planned for Saturday, had to be postponed multiple times. The reason for this isn't any defects in the ship, but rather challenging weather conditions, particularly strong winds, which made the maneuver impossible. With a side height of 70 meters, the ship is extremely susceptible to wind.

The departure of the 342-meter-long, 208,000 GT ship requires extreme precision. It marks the final civilian large-scale shipbuilding project at this site. The shipyard will now focus on building naval vessels and submarines under Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems. The maneuver, which covers over 30 kilometers and takes about twelve hours, is so complicated that the entire harbor basin must be closed for the duration. Several tugs are being used to safely guide the massive cruiser out of the harbor.

From a Giant to a Disney Icon: A Turbulent History
The story of the Disney Adventure is more turbulent than almost any other in recent shipbuilding history. The cruise giant began its life in 2018 under the name Global Dream, planned for the Asian market. With a passenger capacity of up to 9,500 guests, it was intended to be one of the largest ships in the world. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent insolvency of the MV Werften group in early 2022 halted the project.

At that time, the ship was already 75 to 80 percent complete. At the end of 2022, the Walt Disney Company acquired the unfinished colossus for just 40 million euros. This acquisition allowed Disney to bypass the long waiting times for new builds and accelerate the expansion of its fleet.

The subsequent completion by Meyer Werft in Wismar completely transformed the ship. The concept was adapted to Disney's needs, including a reduction in passenger capacity to around 6,000 guests. This created enough space for the unique, family-friendly attractions that Disney cruises are known for. The propulsion system was also converted to use more environmentally friendly green methanol.

The Future of the Disney Adventure
After sea trials, the Disney Adventure will be transferred to Singapore, where it will offer year-round cruises in Southeast Asia starting December 15, 2025. This makes it the first Disney Cruise Line ship to be permanently stationed outside the US market. The successful completion of this complex project, despite a long construction period of seven years and numerous setbacks, is a strong testament to the expertise of the German shipbuilding industry.
