A morning shock in the heart of the Port of Hamburg: An alarming incident occurred in the Peutehafen area in Veddel on Thursday morning, August 21, 2025. Approximately 2,000 liters of diesel fuel leaked from an inland vessel, spreading across the water. Only the swift and professional intervention of the Hamburg Fire Department prevented widespread environmental contamination of the Norderelbe River.

Around 6:50 AM, an emergency call was received by the control center. A 28-meter-long pusher boat, a workhorse of the port, had sprung a leak. It was later discovered that a crack, about 10 centimeters long, in one of its two 4,000-liter fuel tanks was the cause. An oil slick quickly formed over an area of about 2,000 square meters—a serious threat to the harbor basin's ecosystem. The precise cause of the crack, whether material fatigue or an unnoticed collision, is currently unclear and is being investigated by the water police.

The Hamburg Fire Department responded immediately, deploying a large contingent of around 60 emergency personnel. Among them were specialists from the Technical and Environmental Protection Unit, who are highly trained and equipped for such situations. The operation was a race against time and was managed on several fronts simultaneously:

  1. Sealing the Leak: Fire department divers entered the murky harbor water to locate the crack on the ship's hull and apply a provisional seal.
  2. Containing the Hazard: At the same time, the remaining 2,000 liters of diesel were pumped from the damaged tank into the vessel's second, intact tank. This effectively stopped the source of the spill.
  3. Stopping the Spread: Using several boats, including the fireboat "Prag," a total of about 400 meters of oil booms and 175 meters of absorbent sausages were deployed. These barriers contained the oil slick and successfully prevented the diesel from drifting into the Norderelbe River.

After about five hours, the intensive operation by the fire department was concluded. The immediate danger was averted.

Responsibility for cleaning up the oil slick has been handed over to a specialized company. They will now professionally remove the diesel from the water and dispose of it. The entire process is under the close supervision of Hamburg's Authority for Environment, Climate, Energy, and Agriculture (BUKEA), which ensures that the ecological damage is minimized as much as possible.

This incident impressively demonstrates the risks inherent in the daily operations of a global port, but also highlights how incredibly effective and prepared Hamburg's emergency services are for such events. A well-coordinated effort that nipped a potential environmental disaster in the bud.
