Strategic Fleet Development and Route Adjustments
A central pillar of the company's strategy is the largest modernization program in the history of AIDA Cruises, known as "AIDA Evolution". This program aims to comprehensively renew the Sphinx-class ships and position them as the future
AIDAselection fleet.
The kickoff for this extensive modernization was successfully completed with the AIDAdiva. After a seven-week drydock stay from February 3 to March 21, 2025, in Marseille, France, the ship was fundamentally modernized. The renovation work included around 300 major projects, in which the cabins were equipped with new canopies, carpets, and curtains to create a brighter and more modern atmosphere. Additionally, new chairs and sofas were installed in the balcony cabins, and some cabins were expanded to accommodate four people for families. Restaurants, bars, and the entertainment offerings were also overhauled. For the first three drydocks alone, AIDA is investing a three-digit million amount, which underscores the program's significance.
The modernization of the fleet is a strategic move that goes beyond simple maintenance. By rebranding the modernized ships as the AIDAselection fleet, AIDA is creating a new product category that is likely to appeal to a customer segment that appreciates smaller ships and more intimate travel experiences. Instead of phasing out older vessels, these valuable assets are being upgraded for the future, contributing to the diversification of the product portfolio. The plan is to modernize the entire Sphinx class by 2028.
The next modernization dates are already set: AIDAluna will be refitted from October 22 to December 10, 2025, followed by AIDAbella from January 21 to March 11, 2026.
At the same time, AIDA Cruises is securing its long-term growth by ordering two new cruise ships from the Italian shipyard Fincantieri. These new builds, scheduled for delivery from 2030, solidify the company's position as a market leader and secure its expansion plans for the next decade.
In addition to these long-term investments, the company demonstrates remarkable adaptability to global conditions. Due to increasing geopolitical tensions and security concerns in the Middle East, AIDA has canceled the entire 2025/2026 Orient season. As a direct consequence, the flagship
AIDAprima was redeployed to new routes in Northern Europe and the Canary Islands, departing from Hamburg and Kiel. For affected guests, the company is offering flexible rebooking options, including future cruise credits with a 10% bonus or a full refund of the fare.
This decision to cancel an entire season in a region demonstrates the shipping company's proactive risk management. By shifting the focus to the home market and "closer-to-home" routes, they are not only responding to security risks but also strengthening the trust of their core audience in an uncertain environment.

Daily Events and Operational Announcements
In addition to the strategic course-setting, numerous operational announcements dominate AIDA's daily business. For example, the AIDAmar opened the cruise season in its summer home port of Warnemünde. In Kiel, the 2025 season was launched two weeks earlier than usual by the
AIDAnova, which was also a candidate for the 4000th port call in Kiel's history. These early season openings and the expansion of regional ports like Kiel underline the increased focus on the German market.
Operational adjustments are part of everyday life in the cruise business. Recently, several route changes were reported due to weather whims: AIDAsol was unable to call at the Scottish ports of Aberdeen and Lerwick , while
AIDAluna docked in Narvik instead of Haugesund due to weather conditions. The
AIDAdiva also had to change its route from Lisbon to Vigo due to storm damage. These incidents highlight the constant, unpredictable challenges in maritime logistics. The shipping company's ability to react quickly to these circumstances and adjust routes is crucial for maintaining operational reliability.
A positive example of the AIDA crews' commitment is the incident near Spitsbergen, where the crew of the AIDAluna came to the aid of castaways. Such actions reinforce the brand image and the crews' sense of responsibility. Similarly, medical evacuations from
AIDAperla and AIDAluna were successfully carried out, demonstrating the crew's constant readiness for emergencies.
Partnerships, Awards, and Product Innovations
AIDA Cruises is specifically engaging in new partnerships to strengthen its brand values and deepen its social roots. As a new "Classic Sponsor" of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the company underscores its values such as open-mindedness and cultural diversity, which are at the core of the brand. This partnership is part of a broad strategy that integrates AIDA into the cultural and social fabric of its home markets, creating positive associations beyond the actual travel experience.
Engagement in sports is also being expanded. AIDA and the Hamburger Sport-Verein (HSV) have deepened their collaboration and are now specifically supporting the club's women's football team. This commitment aims to promote young talent and role models to inspire future generations. This strategic sponsorship uses the emotional connection to sports to reach a broader audience.
Other social contributions were recently announced: a donation to the Nurse Club Stiftung and the handover of 720 kilograms of food from the
AIDAluna to the Kieler Tafel.
In terms of sustainability and product innovation, AIDA Cruises has also made progress. The award at the ESG Shipping Awards 2025 in two categories confirms the commitment to environmental, social, and corporate governance principles.
New offerings are continuously being introduced on board, including new drink packages and swimming lessons for children, which have been available on board since February 2024. In partnership with the Kiel-based company
my Boo, AIDA also provides bamboo bicycles for shore excursions, which have already been successfully tested in Sicily. To optimize the digital experience for guests, the infotainment systems in over 11,000 cabins on six ships, including
AIDAnova, have been modernized in collaboration with VITEC.
Conclusion and Outlook
The recent developments show that AIDA Cruises is pursuing a multifaceted and forward-looking strategy. The extensive AIDA Evolution program secures existing fleet values and achieves a differentiated market position. The ordering of new ships ensures long-term growth. At the same time, the company demonstrates high operational agility through the short-term cancellation of the Orient season and the rerouting of the AIDAprima. AIDA strengthens its brand reputation not only through product innovations but also through targeted social and cultural engagement. This combination of strategic foresight, operational flexibility, and strong brand management positions AIDA Cruises to continue expanding its leading role in the cruise market even in a constantly changing environment.
