This incident comes as a surprise, as the MS Finnmarken underwent an extensive modernization and technical overhaul in a shipyard in Frederikshavn, Denmark, just this spring. During that dry dock period, the ship was also renamed back to its original name, MS Finnmarken, which honours a region in northern Norway. It had been temporarily operating under the name MS Otto Sverdrup. As part of Hurtigruten's Signature fleet, the vessel serves the year-round expedition route to and from Hamburg.
The reason for the unscheduled stop is an issue with one of the stern thrusters. These essential propulsion components are crucial for a ship's maneuverability. They enable lateral movements, which are particularly vital for precise docking and undocking at the pier, as well as for complex turning maneuvers in port. Safe operation cannot be guaranteed without their full functionality.
The repair work is expected to take approximately two weeks. Hurtigruten plans to resume the regular schedule with the MS Finnmarken on Friday, August 8, 2025. The summer journey commencing on that date will travel along the Norwegian coast to the North Cape, including stops in picturesque locations such as Stavanger, Bergen, the Hjørundfjord, and the Senja and Lofoten archipelagos. Thanks to its hybrid drive and shore power capability, the MS Finnmarken can significantly reduce emissions and fuel consumption both at sea and in port.
