The outbreak began early in the journey, which departed from Bremerhaven. Upon arrival in Brønnøysund, Norway, last Tuesday, about 50 individuals were already infected. This number increased significantly as the week progressed. Norovirus causes typical symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, often accompanied by fever and significant fluid loss. However, according to the cruise line, Phoenix Reisen, the countermeasures taken are already showing results; the number of acutely ill individuals had reportedly dropped to 45 by Thursday.
Norwegian health authorities are closely monitoring the situation aboard the MS Artania. A Norwegian public health official emphasized to the media that in such cases, the primary responsibility for containment lies with the ship's crew. Nevertheless, the situation is being carefully watched, as severe cases might require affected guests to be medically treated in a hospital ashore. The ship's medical center is currently under heavy demand and is also tasked with investigating the cause of the outbreak.
Despite the incident, the MS Artania's itinerary continues as scheduled. Passengers without symptoms are still permitted to go ashore for planned excursions and port calls. Today, Friday, July 11th, 2025, the cruise ship has reached the port of Honningsvåg at the North Cape. From there, the MS Artania will resume its journey south in the evening, heading back to Bremerhaven via several other ports along the Norwegian coast.
