Costa Favolosa: Season Kick-off in Hamburg with Eco-Friendly Energy Supply
Today's arrival of the Costa Favolosa in Hamburg marks not only the beginning of the new cruise season but also a more environmentally conscious era for the vessel in the Hanseatic city. Following the successful completion of all technical integration tests and its initial connection to Hamburg's shore power grid last September, the ship will now regularly utilise shore power. Until September, a variety of northbound routes are scheduled from Hamburg. Destinations include England, Scotland, Norway, Iceland, the Shetland Islands, the Lofoten Islands, the North Cape, as well as the remote locations of Greenland and Spitsbergen.
Journey durations vary between eight and 23 days. Extended port stays of over nine hours in the respective harbours allow passengers ample time for in-depth exploration. The travel experience is enhanced onboard with culinary delights: each evening, Costa presents "Destination Dishes" – regionally inspired meals conceptualised by Italian star chef Bruno Barbieri, such as reindeer burgers from Greenland or a stockfish salad typical of the Lofoten Islands.
Costa Diadema: Kiel as Renewed Home Port and Innovative Sea Experiences
Kiel also solidifies its role as a key port for Costa Cruises. Starting May 16, 2025, and continuing until September, the Costa Diadema will dock at Kiel's Ostuferhafen every Friday. From there, eight-day cruises will commence, travelling via Denmark to Norway's impressive fjord landscapes. An exclusive offering from Costa are the new "Sea Destinations": these provide guests with extraordinary experiences at distinctive locations along the sea route, opening up a unique perspective from the ocean.
The Costa Diadema was already the first ship in the fleet to use shore power in Kiel in 2024. Since then, the ship's operations during port stays have been emission-free. In addition to Hamburg and Kiel, international ports such as Ålesund and Kristiansand are also part of the itinerary planning where Costa also relies on shore power supply.
Olaf Kistenmacher, Director Sales at Costa Cruises in Germany, commented: "Costa cruises in Northern Europe represent a very special adventure. It is gratifying that our ships will once again depart from Hamburg and Kiel this year to the most beautiful destinations in this region. The fact that we can now draw on shore power for all calls in Germany is another highlight and a significant milestone on our path to achieving our goal of net-zero emissions in our fleet's ship operations by 2050."
